WHAT IS THE CHURCH OF CHRIST?

WHAT IS THE CHURCH OF CHRIST?

Consider the church found in the New Testament:

  • The church is part of God's original plan of salvation for man through Jesus Christ and is the fullness of Christ. Ephesians 1:3-4...19-23
  • The church was purchased by, built by, and belongs to Jesus Christ. It is organized and functions the way He determined, as described in the New Testament. Matthew 16:16-18, Acts 20:28, 1 Timothy 3:15
  • The church, the one body of Christ with Him alone as the head, consists of obedient Christians. It has no founder other than Jesus nor headquarters other than Heaven. Ephesians 1:22-23, Ephesians 4:4, Colossians 1:18
  • The individual members have followed the will of the Lord in order to receive salvation from their sins and are now in Christ, added by the Lord. Acts 2:47

  • Can describe Christians in a locality, who assemble together to worship our Lord and God, using the Bible, the word of God, as the only standard of authority.  Acts 20:7, Romans 10:17, 1 Corinthians 1:2, 1 John 2:3-6
  • Local Christians, who meet together as a church to provide each other spiritual edification. Hebrews 10:23-25
  • The organization of the church consists of Jesus as the head over the body of believers and a plurality of qualified local elders (aka bishops, shepherds, overseers) and deacons who have authority only among the saints they are meeting with. Ephesians 1:22-23, Colossians 1:18, Acts 20:28, 1 Peter 5:1-3, 1 Timothy 3:1-13, Titus 1:5-9
  • A family in Christ who love God, love (and are therefore obedient to) His truth, and love and care for one another. 1 John 2:10, 3:18, 4:7-11, 5:1-3, John 17:17, 2 Thessalonians 2:10
