Why Desire to Grow Spiritually?

A Christian is asked, “Why do you want to grow spiritually?”  Here are some good answers he may give.

  1. Because God commands me to – 1 Peter 2:2
  • Because I want to obey God and please Him – 2 Corinthians 5:9
  • Because I have tasted that the Lord is gracious – 1 Peter 2:3
  • Because I want to draw closer to God and my Savior – Hebrews 10:22; James 5:8
  • Because I desire and crave His word – 1 Peter 2:2; Psalm 19:10
  • Because I want and need to have greater faith – belief, confidence, assurance, and trust in God – 2 Thessalonians 1:3
  • Because I want to know more of God’s word so that I won’t sin against God – Psalm 119:11
  • Because Christ gave His life for me, and His love motivates me to grow – 2 Corinthians 5:14-15
  • Because true treasures are in heaven, and this world will pass away – Matthew 6:19-21
  1. Because I was saved not to rest but to work for the Lord; rest will come later – John 6:27; Revelation 14:13
  1. Because if I don’t grow I will be ripe for falling; I cannot run in neutral – 2 Peter 3:17-18; Hebrews 5:12-14
  1. Because the more I grow the brighter the light I can be in this world, bringing glory to God – Philippians 2:15; Matthew 5:16
  1. Because I want to be prepared to face greater difficulties than I have already have faced – James 1:2-4
  1. Because I want to be able to serve others more – Galatians 5:13-14
  1. Because I want to be fruitful in every good work – Colossians 1:10
  1. Because I want greater joy and contentment – Philippians 4:11-13
  1. Because I want more harmonious relationships with my brethren – 2 Peter 1:7; 2 Thessalonians 1:3
  1. Because I want to be able to defend the truth against error – Acts 20:29-32
  1. Because I know Satan wants nothing more than for me to fall away – 1 Peter 5:8; Hebrews 10:39
  • Because I don’t want to just slowly drift away from the Lord – Hebrews 2:1
  • Because I want to be able to show others the way of truth – 1 Timothy 4:16; 2 Timothy 2:2
  • Because if I think I’m too strong to fall, then I’m ripe for picking by the devil – 1 Corinthians 10:12
  • Because I want to be a better example and influence in order to lead others to Christ instead of causing others to blaspheme His name – Matthew 5:13; 1 Peter 2:11-12; Romans 2:24
  • Because I need more wisdom and better spiritual discernment to make wise choices in my life – Philippians 1:9-10
  • Because I want to be stronger in the face of temptations – Psalm 119:104; 1 Peter 5:9
  • Because I want to rightly divide the word of truth so that I can avoid error that would overthrow my faith – 2 Timothy 2:15-18
  • Because I want to make my calling and election sure – 2 Peter 1:9
  • Because I do not want to be short-sighted but long-sighted, remembering that I was purged from my past sins – 2 Peter 1:9
  • Because I want to be holy in conduct as God’s word instructs  – 1 Peter 1:15-16
  • Because I want to root out wrong thinking in my life  – Proverbs 23:7; Ephesians 4:17-18; Philippians 4:8
  • Because I want to be pure in heart and motive – 1 Timothy 1:5
  • Because I want to live to obtain a home in heaven instead of living for the present – Philippians 3:18-21
  • Husbands or fathers – Because I want to lead my family in the ways of the Lord – Ephesians 5:23, 25; 6:4
  • Because I want to see the Lord’s church in this community please God and be a light to others – Revelation 3:7-13; 1 Thessalonians 1:8
  • Because I want to be transformed by the truth and not conformed to this world – Romans 12:2
  • Because I live with a debt of gratitude to the one who loved me and died for me – Galatians 2:20
  • Because I want to approve the things that are excellent – Philippians 1:10
